We lived in the post-war housing development just across the street from the cannery, and the sound of the train at night stopping to pick up produce, the extreme smells of rotting brussels sprouts, still remain in my memory, viscerally. My mother also worked in the shirt factory right next door to our house. I’d also love to know more about the housing development itself, how and why it was built there — in an area that was previously a racetrack? I know it seemed to mainly house working class families. We were one of the two Asian American (Filipino) families living on Anderson St.

I heard from a Monterey County dairy man that Santa Cruz counties roles and regulations for producing and selling fresh milk are prohibitive .

Often in the morning there would be fog a few hundred feet below on both sides so it seemed I was driving above the clouds. Coming home at night, I seemed to be eye-level with the airplanes lining up to land at SFO. I would see the same 10-15 cars every weekday (weekends were more crowded and scary) and we would wave, a secret society of 5:30am drivers…

I wanted to know what Naval ship it was and can’t seem to find any history of it.
Can anyone please help me?

Thanx for the history of the blowholes!

That is inspiring Cindy! Do you allow native grazers on your land while keeping livestock out?

It is perplexing that livestock grazing (the source of the problem) is being touted as a solution to the invasive plants that they actually spread. Such lies being spread en mass shows the power of the animal agriculture.

Sort of scary for a boy nine years old (or younger). Had to walk through dark and scary woods to get there. My parents used to drive the Old Road to get to Seacliff Beach. They refused to take us to Santa Cruz because they were concerned that my younger brother and I would to ride the roller coaster and other rides.

Comment on Ohlone, Coastanoan or Awaswas: Correcting History’s Misnomers by Anthony /santacruz/ohlone-coastanoan-or-awaswas-correcting-histories-misnomers/#comment-157460 Mon, 20 Jan 2020 23:02:55 +0000 /?p=8586#comment-157460 Can you help clarify the understanding of the difference, if there is one, between Awaswas and Awaswa? It seems that the Awaswas is the name of the language? with Awaswa the term for the people who spoke it? or do I have that wrong?

Also, what is the avenue to lean more and talk with someone from the tribe or representing the interests of the tirbe?

Thank you

I’m looking for pics and info about equipment used to build the barrels to carry/haul the lime from the lime kilns on Fall Creek trail. I once had a book, a white paperback, that has been lost (I don’t remember the title..maybe?? “Ghost Towns of the SC mountains”). It had lots of info and past and present pics of places in the SC mountains such as “Patchen” on Summit road. I’m particularly looking for pics and info on the the equipment used at the lime kilns. Thank you for your time,
Lara
